Significant damage to the hull may cause the boat to flood with water or produce stress cracks which may develop into hull failure at a later time. After any significant collision or hard grounding, the boat should be hauled out of the water and the hull inspected for cracks, fractures of joints, or any other damage. In the harsh marine environment boat fiberglass finishes have actually proven to be durable and easy to maintain. Basic maintenance is the key to a long lasting, new boat looking shine unsealed and dirty fiberglass will absorb dirt and other contaminants if not properly cared for. Heavy duty rubbing compounds can be used to remove scratches and restore the boats finish to badly sun damaged gel coat finishes. Less abrasive polishes should always be tried first cleaner/wax combination products are often a good choice and will deep clean lightly stained or faded surfaces. Products that wax only will usually be the longest lasting but should only be used as a final step never seal in dirt and grime, you may cause a stain that will prove to be difficult or impossible to remove later. Boat Trailer RepairBefore you can get in the water the trailer needs maintenance or you will be stranded on the side of the road. Wheel bearings should be inspected and packed at least once a season to prevent over heating and seizure. The lights should be checked before each trip. The tires should be inflated to the recommended pressure always check the tires for worn treads and cracks in the sidewalls. |
